Vira Lata: From The Streets of Brazil

Vira Lata isn't named after one individual; it's named after a whole spirit. In Brazil, "vira-lata" is the affectionate term for the street dog: resourceful, resilient and full of character. The name translates literally as "can-turner," a nod to how these dogs make the most of whatever comes their way. They're not pedigrees. They're survivors, and in Brazil they've become a symbol of the country's warmth and everyday life.

Why the Name Fits This Coffee

This blend is a tribute to that same spirit of honest, unpretentious character. It's sourced from the rolling hills of southern Minas Gerais, a region where generations of small family farms have quietly perfected the craft of growing exceptional coffee, much of it channelled through the Cocatrel Cooperative, one of Brazil's largest coffee cooperatives, founded in the town of Tres Pontas back in 1961.

Cocatrel today brings together thousands of coffee-growing families, more than half of them farming plots of less than 10 hectares. Every delivery to the cooperative is tagged and tracked with a unique QR code, giving each grower full traceability over where their coffee ends up, from a small farm's beans, all the way to the cup. The cooperative's cupping team selects lots for a sweet, creamy character built around hazelnut and praline notes, with every batch required to score at least 83 points for quality and cleanliness before it makes the cut.

The coffee is dried slowly and carefully, resting in shallow static boxes rather than being turned during the process, with careful temperature control throughout. That patience is part of what draws out the fuller, fruitier character the region is known for.

The Result in the Cup

Just like the dog it's named after, this coffee doesn't rely on pedigree to impress. It's rich milk chocolate, buttery biscuit and sweet praline, wrapped in a creamy, full-bodied finish. It's sweet, comforting and effortlessly reliable, whether pulled as a silky espresso or paired with milk for a flat white or cappuccino.

Vira Lata proves, cup after cup, that character will always outshine pedigree.
